Our research into Internet connectivity has been undertaken in the UK, Poland and Swizerland to date; with key findings including:
Key finding | Implication for businesses |
A significant proportion of the market have effective multi-platform usage and are increasingly demanding access to services from a range of platforms. |
The challenge for all parties in this space is to ensure that consumers are able to navigate multiple devices and connectivity simply and easily. Need to ensure services have a multi device capability. |
Consumers will increasingly expect connectivity to follow devices, mobile within and outside of the home. |
Implications for the way in which media is consumed but also implications for potential network congestion / limitations. More work needs to be done to encourage multiple connectivity options to keep pace with opportunities created by devices |
Important not to stereotype usage of mobile devices as being ‘on the move’ as they are often being used in home or in other fixed points. |
This has important implications for content because mobile forms of connectivity are not all about snacking on the move. Often lengthy and frequent sessions are accessed via mobile devices – producing implications for tariffs and network quality. |
There were particular device & connectivity combinations associated with more frequent usage of some apps. |
Mobile broadband is attracting very wide usage of apps, including data heavy entertainment applications. There may be a need to direct consumers to usage of home WiFi to avoid network congestion for these. Bundling connectivity solutions is clearly a key opportunity for vendors. |
